British Gas ASA NER (25m) Championships


A team of Rotherham Metro’s finest swimmers competed at the Age Group and the Senior Junior Winter North East Regional held at Sunderland over the weekend of 6th and 7th November. Outside of the nationals this is the premier meet for swimmers from our region. The Age group consisted of heat declared winners with the seniors having the top ten contesting the finals.

 

Age Group competition

In the age group section eleven year-old Holly Sotheran came away with an astonishing six medals which consisted of Gold in the 1500M Freestyle, Silver in the 200M Butterfly and Bronze medals in the 400M and 800M Freestyle and to finish a Bronze medal in the 400IM. Mathew Sotheran won a Silver medal in the 400IM followed by Bronze in the 100M Freestyle with eleven year-old Connor Neal competing in his first NER’s taking a well deserved Bronze medal in the 100M Butterfly. Thirteen year-old Nicole Clarke set a new club record in the girls 1500M Freestyle.

 

Also competing in the competition were:

Robert Kirk, Josh Hillman, Abbie Hull, Jessica Bushby, Bethany Woodcock, George Russell and Shannon Eades.

 

Senior Junior competition

In the senior competition seventeen year-old Simon Worne reached two finals where he claimed the Silver medal in the 50M Breaststroke and finishing 5th in the 100M Breaststroke. Sixteen year-old Charlotte Pearson claimed a hat trick of finals finishing 4th in the 50M Butterfly, 8th in the 100M Butterfly and 9th in the 50M Freestyle, in an extremely fast 50M Backstroke Thomas Nelson (19) finished 9th. In the junior section sixteen year-old Josh Whitehurst produced an outstanding swim to claim the Silver medal, Emily shone (14) reached the 50M Backstroke final where she gained a junior Bronze medal. In a very measured swim fourteen year-old Kelsey Longden managed to beat the longest standing junior girls record in 200M Butterfly by 6 hundredths of a second. In the 400IM the men’s team finished a creditable 9th.
